Ingredients

  • ½ to 1 cup of cheddar cheese shredded
  • ½ cup of Monterey jack cheese shredded
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 package of crescent dough
  • 1 pound of breakfast sausage
  • ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder

Instructions

  • Start by unrolling the dough and spread it on a large casserole dish. Make sure you spray the bottom with a non-stick spray before you spread the rolls. Preheat your oven to 375oF and bake the dough for five minutes. It will make a crispy base and will hold the dish better.
  • Using medium heat, crumble the breakfast sausage. And when they are brown, transfer to another plate that you already lined with a paper towel to absorb the extra grease.
  • Use a large bowl to beat the eggs, and slowly add in the milk and all of the seasonings. Make sure that there is no lump or you overwork the eggs.
  • Start creating the layers by spreading evenly the sausage over the baked dough base. Continue with the cheese, again, spread them evenly. And finally pour the egg and milk mix on top.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or when you can see the top starts to get brown. You also can check with a toothpick. Insert it into the closest section near you, and when it’s come out clean, it means the casserole is done. Let it cool for a couple of minutes before cutting to serve.

Notes

If you choose to make the casserole ahead of time, you don’t have to bake the dough first. You can layer the sausage and cheese directly. It will create a less-crisp base but still delicious nonetheless. Cover the dish and store it in the fridge. You can put it directly in the oven the next day.

If you want to experiment with the flavor, you can change the sausage to a regular or even Italian sausage. You also can experiment with the cheese by using Asiago or mozzarella instead of Monterrey Jack. Or maybe even an aged cheddar instead of the regular one.

This recipe is open for interpretation as long as you’re keeping the primary four types of ingredients. It won’t be a surprise if your crescent roll sausage egg casserole becomes part of your Sunday lunch repertoire.
