Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups onions finely chopped
  • 3 cups water
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • 2 tbs. tomato paste
  • 1 tbs. cornstarch
  • 1 ½ tsp. olive oil
  • 2 tsp. corn syrup
  • 1 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • ½ tsp. salt

Instructions
 

  • Set your stove on medium heat and heat oil in a saucepan.
  • Sauté the chopped onions until they turn soft, but before turning brown, for approximately 5 minutes.
  • Add water, tomato paste, corn starch, corn syrup, pepper and salt into the saucepan and stir well.
  • After the sauce mixture boil, lower the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes.
  • Add vinegar into the sauce before simmering it for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until it turns into thick consistency.

Notes

Here are a couple of tips of recreating this recipe. First, if you use red onions, they have extra layer beneath the outer layer, so keep in mind to remove it. Second, you may switch the tomato paste by using ketchup (2 tsp.), barbecue sauce, or Kansas City-styled sweet tomato sauce.
